- to investigate the challenge of human suffering;
- to provide a redemptive understanding of suffering;
- to facilitate dialogue among persons who suffer, those in the helping professions, and representatives of religious or like-minded tradition;
- to walk with those who suffer, or to stand with them if need be;
- to empower persons in their suffering and help them retain their dignity;
- to enable persons who suffer to find models in their suffering, such as Jesus Christ;
- to advocate to the extent possible on behalf of those who suffer.
Activities
- publishes a quarterly paper, The Notebook, Reflections on the Mystery of Suffering;
- sponsors seminars and programs on various forms of suffering;
- conducts Israel Bible Study Programs for persons with disabilities;
- corresponds with and provides networking opportunities for those who suffer.
Conditions
- a society struggling with its understanding of suffering needs a counter-cultural witness;
- suffering people experience exclusion and require help in gaining inclusion;
- those who suffer have a voice we should hear and provide example we can follow.
A Brief Description of Stauros, USA
Founded in 1973 by the Passionist Congregation which continues as a sponsor.
Stauros, U.S.A., offices are located at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago.
